background: Soma's highly-dedicated butler, Agni comes with his master to England in search of Meena. Agni is a master at Indian cooking, and has even shown some skill in landscaping (turning the bushes in the Phantomhive Manor's garden into topiary elephants, for instance). But even more impressive than his cooking skills is his martial arts ability. When he and Soma meet Ciel and Sebastian, Soma orders the butlers to fight. In a move that surprises even Sebastian, Agni proceeds to give the demon a run for his money. In battle, he attacks his enemy's marmam, or pressure points, which can result in paralysis or death. In addition, his right hand has been blessed by the goddess Kali, giving him enhanced strength.

[highlight for spoilers] In reality, Agni was born Arshad, a member of India's highest caste, the Brahmans. Despite the caste's supposedly holy nature, Arshad had no faith in the existence of the gods. He spent his time concentrating on the material world, surrounding himself with beautiful women and getting into fights. Eventually his blasphemy caught up to him and he was sentenced to death. But on the executioner's block, a miracle occurred. Soma, having heard that there was a man with the strength of a demon about to be executed, decided that he wanted Arshad to be his sparring partner. When the official presiding over the execution told Soma that this was impossible, as justice needed to be carried out, Soma responded by cutting short all but one lock of Arshad's hair and giving him a new name, Agni-- with this, he said, Arshad was dead, reborn into a new man. Because of this, Agni developed a faith in Soma bordering on worship. Indeed, he refers to Soma as his god.

[highlight for spoilers] Despite this, in England, Agni finds him in the uncomfortable position of having to betray Soma in order to protect him. In order to keep Soma from finding out the truth about Meena, he becomes a part of West's plan to create a monopoly on Indian imports. To this end is Agni who commits the Anglo-Indian murders and also serves as West's cook in the curry competition. However, when Soma confronts Meena again, he recognizes what Agni has done for him, and offers him a position as his butler once more. Currently, the two of them are looking after Ciel's London townhouse.

personality: Agni is an extremely cheerful and good-natured man. He's almost never without a smile, even when carrying out the more difficult of Soma's orders. When speaking of Soma, he has the tendency to become worked up and go on at length extolling his virtues. Despite this excitability, Agni is overall extremely patient and calmly handles whatever new situation his master thrusts him into. Unlike with Soma, his cheerfulness does not signify a naive outlook on the world-- Agni is familiar with the dirtier truths of the world and and is willing to do whatever it takes to keep Soma happy.

When in his Samadhi, or berserker state, Agni becomes a destructive and uncontrollable force. He calls upon his faith in Soma to push his body to inhuman limits and blinds himself to all else.
