This, and the military presence the company used to put down local rulers who resisted, led to the Indian Rebellion of 1857-1858 (referred to by Indians as the "First War of Independence" and by British as "The Great Mutiny"). Though India did not escape the colonial rule, the East India Company lost their hold. From then on, India was ruled directly from London, with a restructured government known as the British Raj. manga: A dissatisfaction with British rule appears to be the reason behind the murders of British officials, military men, and traders with connections to British India. Ciel shares the sentiment, though his own reasons for disapproval relate more to the fact that he sees those who have made their fortune exploiting India as the nouveau rich and hardly worthy of consideration. history: The Coffee House, which specialized in curry and offered hookahs for its patrons to smoke, was said to be the first Indian restaurant in Britain. Sake Deen Mahomed opened it in 1809 in Portman Square in London. manga: Several men associated with the British occupation in India were murdered and strung up in front of the Coffee House. history:Kali is one of the "goddesses of the tooth" in Hinduism. Though she is a associated with destruction and death, her devotees often refer to her as a mother figure. In fact, she is seen as one of the most loving of the Hindu goddesses. She plays a central role in both Tantric and Bengali tradition in both her fearsome and loving aspects. Her iconography often portrays her with either four or ten arms. She is the consort of Shiva, and often shown stepping on his prone form in reference to the myth in which he lies at her feet to calm her bloodlust. manga: Soma and Agni principally worship Kali, installing a devotional statue of the goddess in Ciel's manor without permission. history: Samadhi is a difficult term to define, loosely meaning "getting towards integration." In Hinduism, it refers to an alternate state of consciousness reached by meditation and an effortless awareness of one's own existence and self. It is considered impossible to reach the highest level of samadhi and still remain functional in the material world, and in fact, a great yogi can even leave their physical form behind while engaging in samadhi. One can also enter into samadhi in bhakti, the personal devotion towards a deity, by meditating and focusing on said deity. manga: Soma defines the berserker-like state Agni occasionally enters as samadhi. Agni engages in the bhakti form of samadhi, putting his mind to Soma, who he considers to be his personal god, and letting his faith carry him into an altered state of consciousness.
