background: As the butler of the Phantomhive household, Sebastian knows that nothing short of perfection is expected from him-- and these exacting requirements are well within his reach. He cooks masterfully, cleans until the house is spotless, gardens, serves as a living mousetrap, creates enormous chocolate sculptures in a single afternoon, and still has time to introduce his young master to a new dessert at tea time. Despite the fact that the household employs several other servants, it's Sebastian who inevitably carries out all the jobs in the house and keeps everything running smoothly.

Sebastian's fantastic abilities aren't limited to household skills, either. He can dodge bullets and throw silverware with deadly accuracy. A bullet to the forehead is only a temporary setback, as is nearly getting sliced in half with a chainsaw. His speed and agility is nothing short of inhuman-- which, of course, is fitting, as Sebastian is actually a demon. The gloves on Sebastian's hands conceal a mark on his left hand identical to the one on Ciel's right eye. This mark is the symbol of their contract, and binds Sebastian to obey Ciel's commands.

[highlight for spoilers] The contract was created after Ciel's kidnappers sacrificed him on an altar. Sebastian appeared and offered Ciel a choice: he could remain a sacrifice or take advantage of Sebastian's powers. Ciel chose the latter, and ordered Sebastian to kill his kidnappers. Sebastian's real name is currently unknown. Ciel appears to have gotten the name "Sebastian" from his pet dog, which died in the same attack that killed his parents.

personality: To the outside world, Sebastian invariably displays a mild and polite (if not a bit weary) smile. He is every inch the responsible butler, following Ciel's every order, no matter how difficult, without complaint. However, he's often internally monologuing at length about the various horrible punishments he'd like to inflict on the incompetent humans surrounding him. Sebastian has a sadistic streak that he's not afraid to indulge when he feels he can get away with it. In situations where Ciel is in danger, he often teases the boy, talking about how helpless Ciel is or attempting to goad him into giving Sebastian a direct order. He genuinely seems to enjoy the push and pull he and Ciel engage in at these times.

However, Sebastian occasionally shows a slightly different side to himself. When he's not busy with his household, he spends his time feeding and cuddling the pet cat he keeps in the garden. He's nothing short of charmed by the cat, and even states that he prefers it to his pet in Hell. And although his dedication to Ciel is mostly due to their contract, every so often he shows a hint of real affection towards the boy: comparing him to the cat, shielding his eyes from a bloody murder, lending him his coat, etc. It's difficult to know exactly what Sebastian's true feelings on Ciel are.

butler catchphrase: "あくまで執事です / Aku made shitsuji desu / I am a butler to the core" OR "悪魔で執事です / Akuma de shitsuji desu / I am a demon and a butler." By switching the "ma" from the beginning of the second word to the end of the first, the result is a rather horrible pun that Sebastian often uses to explain his fantastic feats.

note: "Sebastian Michaelis" was the name of a 17th century exorcist. In 1613, he wrote a book entitled "An Admirable History," which contained a classification of demons.
